Finding Red Gold

As we were selecting the exterior material for the projecting bays on the Needham Place project, a 12 unit apartment building under construction in Needham, MA, we knew we wanted wood. We were looking for a contrasting color and texture to compliment the brick and cast stone masonry which was to be used for the main surface of the building. We wanted a rich natural texture and a smooth, durable surface which would withstand the New England climate with minimum upkeep. Our first choice was clear, all heart, vertical grain redwood, once so common it was used to build picnic tables.
