In order to make room for the expansion of the Shriner’s Hospital in Boston, it was necessary to relocate the research laboratories and related support facilities off campus. The program included 20,000 SF of research laboratory, supporting office and conference space, a vivarium, and laboratory support areas. These elements were slotted into three floors of an existing concrete framed warehouse building undergoing renovation in Cambridge. Careful coordination of the utilities, piping, ductwork and lighting allowed us to maximize the headroom and daylight in the lab and office areas of the plan. Noise and vibration sensitive spaces were isolated in the lowest level of the space. At the end of the ten year construction cycle, the entire facility was moved back to the main campus in Boston.
